Acer Aspire One AOD270-1410 10.1-Inch Deals

For $280, this is a great netbook. It won't replace your home machine, but it's small, light, and the battery really does last for six to eight hours. Using a 4GB memory card for ReadyBoost makes it fast enough to be useable for Office and internet, while the machine is already capable enough to stream video.

Picked up one of these little Acer N2600 netbooks for my wife to haul around on the road. It's actually an impressive little machine, especially after some upgrades. Probably the biggest need is to upgrade the memory to 2 GB. They only install 1 GB in order to keep the price down, but that amount of memory is just too borderline for many needs. Memory is cheap these days, though, and it really can improve the user experience. Changing the memory can be a little intimidating as you need to take the machine half-way apart to access the memory slot(including disconnecting the keyboard temporarily). The previous comment had some tips on that.

I also did the in-place upgrade from Windows Starter to Windows Home Premium. The upgrade code can be purchased on Amazon for about half of the listed retail price. Just makes it a better user experience in many ways. The Windows upgrade probably took about 30 minutes from start to finish but then security patches needed to be downloaded also.

At first I thought the netbook didn't contain a microphone but that was a minor issue with Skype (user error). My wife is using an external mic plugged into the mic port to get a bit higher quality sound.

The wireless N is kind of a "light" version that is capped at 72 Mbps maximum download rate. It's enough for most internet needs, however, and it seems to have good enough range.

This review is for the Acer Aspire One D270-1375 manufactured Feb 2012. It is a top performer, even with 1GB RAM and Windows 7 Starter. I put it under tremendous load and the Intel N2600 never went past 25%. It runs 4 cores (2 Hyperthreaded). I can't find any limits to Windows Starter and now it's my favorite OS of all time. I was going to max out the RAM to what the OS and CPU can handle, but the RAM is soldered on the motherboard, impossible to upgrade past 1GB. It uses RAM efficently, essentially working with 3GB, 1 physical, 2 virtual. I had to change antivirus programs to unload lots of ram. The video performance is top of the line, never slowed down or stalled, even with Netflix, chat, and sound and webcam all running at same time. It does have a mic in lower right corner of screen and it shows up in device manager. I can only guess the 1GB RAM is fixed to conserve battery power, each chip uses watts. They say the battery lasts 8 hours. The Intel N2600 CPU uses only 3.5 watts and the netbook does not need fans, it's fanless and hardly even begins to get slightly warm. I was going to return it for RAM limits but for all I will use it for, even under greatest loads, it runs like a champ and does not come close to reaching it's limitations in CPU and video. So I am going to keep it. Very happy with this little netbook

Thanks to the help of DesertCat I got 2GB RAM installed in this Acer AOD270-1375. You will need the service manual to do it yourself, available online.

I wont get too specific but I would like to say this, it runs smooth, sound quality is excellent, I can run ALL the Total War Games to max settings, as well as Skyrim which should indicate that this Baby will not only be able to handle the upcoming Rome 2 game but also most other games. By the way yes this is also a good Laptop for COD and Battlefield fans! Gaming laptop on the cheap with a nice size screen for when you travel or are at home. How can you go wrong? One of the best investments I made in the last 3 years! Get em before these gems become better known possibly driving the price up more!

I purchased this laptop mainly for entertainment/gaming purpose - This 17" laptop has some of the best specs I was able to find within the price of $700+.

[Pros]
- Graphical capability: I tested several 2008~2011 graphics demanding games using high to ultra settings, and all of them run perfectly fine.
- Heat dissipation: Apple laptops and some HP laptops are notorious for heating (or even overheating) when the user is using them for any graphically demanding tasks. This laptop doesn't have that problem.
- Price: As I said above, a 17" laptop with these specs is quite a bargain for the price. (I almost considered buying an Alienware, but unless you're a power gamer that always plays the most recent high end games, this laptop would be a more suitable alternative).

[Cons]
- Lousy initial setup: If you have purchased a laptop before, you know they usually come with pre-installed bloatwares; this one is not an exception. Also, I noticed that the drivers are not up-to-date, and UEFI BIOS also needs to be updated.
- Wireless card: My neighbor and I share the same wi-fi, and the modem is located in her living room. Even though it's a little bit far from my bedroom, in the past, I have no problem connecting my Macbook Pro to the internet. However, I have noticed that Acer-771G has a significantly lower reception range than my MBP, and it frequently loses connections. The connection slightly improved after I did the updates mentioned above, but it is still far from satisfactory. (See this link for more details: http://community.acer.com/t5/Notebooks-Netbooks/Acer-wifi-limited-connectivity-issue/td-p/3405)

[Neutrals]
- Build quality: The casing feels rather cheap and brittle, but you shouldn't be asking for more with a powerful laptop of this price.
- Design: This is more of a personal statement - I have to admit that the physical design of the laptop still has a great amount of room for improvement.
- Windows 8: From a technical standpoint, this version of OS is indeed less user-friendly than Windows 7. But if you're well-versed with technology, it shouldn't be a problem. I have been using the laptop for a few days now, and the learning curve is not steep at all. The alternative solution would be to spend $4.99 and purchase Stardock's Start8 - If you prefer the conventional Windows start button: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

I was a little apprehensive buying a new computer online with no reviews but this ended up being a great purchase. I needed a new notebook for DJing/music production and occasional gaming and decided on this one. This notebook is FAST and runs everything I throw at it nicely; Ableton Live, Serato DJ, Sleeping Dogs and other newer PC games, and just media in general such as 1080p YouTube videos and things like that. The screen is big and bright, with a native resolution of 1600x900 which, while not true 1080p, is more than sufficient for my needs. I really like the piano black finish and so far it hasn't really been a fingerprint magnet because I wash my hands.

The downsides? There are a couple but they are relatively minor in my opinion. The first is Windows 8; I truly hate this operating system and the first thing I did when I got this notebook was format the HDD and reinstall Windows 7. The battery life also kind of sucks at 4 hours max, but really I keep this thing plugged in 90% of the time. It's also pretty big so it's not the most portable of laptops but for my needs that's not an issue, really, but if you are a frequent traveler I'd look into a smaller option.

Basically, if you are like me and need a notebook that will be used at home 90% of the time then this is a good choice.

I got this computer after Amazon jacked up the price of it's older model by $150. I bought this laptop so I can do studio work on it and some gaming on the side. On first impression I was amazed at how fast it was, and how bright and crisp the screen is. After the quick set up of windows 8, I noticed that it came pre-loaded with some annoying software. After spending the better part of my afternoon removing it I got down to installing my own programs. The computer runs almost flawlessly. No matter what I throw at it, there seems to be little to no issues. This is due to the 2.6 Ghz i5 processor. The turbo boost on it really means that this is a 3.2Ghz core. The 8 Gb of ram is amazing, and the Hard drive isn't nearly as slow as some people would make it out to be. When I ran some games I was amazed at what the Nvidia 730m can do. I ran Crysis 1 at max settings and had no lag whatsoever and Fallout: NV runs at Ultra high, also no lag. This thing is FAST! Another nice bonus is that the built in speakers are fantastic. They are some of the best sounding laptop speakers I have ever heard.

Once it became time to charge my laptop I noticed a few things. This computer when running at a moderate workload will only last about 2-2.5 hours. If you are really working hard (or gaming hard) the laptop will die on you in about an hour after full charge. Once I plugged in my computer I noticed that it has an irritating little beep that it makes every time you Plug/unplug it. This wouldn't be a problem i thought, but after a few min. of charging it beeped again. Something was causing my computer to charge on and off and thus making it produce that irritating beeping noise over and over again, however this may be just an independent issue. Another small problem is the black on the computer is very shiny and it stains with fingerprints very easy. This means that every time you go to open or close the computer, you leave a mark, and when you type, your hands are on the black under the keyboard and your palms are smudging the finish. Another thing about the computer is that i didn't know how big a 17.3 inch screen would really be. This laptop is not the most portable, but If you are stationary 90% of the time, you shouldn't notice a problem with it.

In short: The computer runs like a dream, but there are still some things to be desired. I love it and would recommend it to my friends. This computer gives you the most bang for your buck when you are looking at mid-high end laptops!

Acer Aspire V5-171-6614 11.6-Inch Laptop Deals

By M. Nguyen - (Ca)
This review is from: Acer Aspire V5-171-6614 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silky Silver) (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a 11.6" and saw a similar one at a store. I liked the form factor. It is thin and small. I like that it feels solid. There is minimal screen wobble. I felt it was well made. So I did what I haven't done ever. I went on Amazon bought this laptop at full retail price (but cheaper than the retail store). I am using the laptop to write this review.

The good:
Nice screen. Nice resolution. I got it mainly for school and it does great. When I am at school, I set the screen to the lowest brightness as my class lasts 6 hours. The battery indicator says it would last 6 to 7 hours on a full charge with no wifi or anything else. With wifi and a bluetooth mouse, I get about 4 hours. Bluetooth is great. It works flawlessly with the mouse. The moment I turn on the laptop, the mouse is working. Sometimes there are hiccups. For school and internet, I feel it is speedy. I also did some photo editing work in Adobe Lightroom and it worked out well. The SD card reader worked well.

The bad:
The biggest problem I have with the laptop is the keyboard. The keyboard is fine. It feels great and works well. BUT the spacebar is horribly designed. It is in the right place but the way they designed it, means you have to hit exactly in the middle to get it to register. If you hit it to the left, right, or near the bottom, it won't register. I don't know how many times I type things out and have to go back to put in a space between letters. It got so amazingly annoying. I decided to pull the spacebar key out. I cut a small piece of paper and stick it under the spacebar. And it worked! The spacebar works now with about 99% effectiveness. Honestly, if this happened in-store, I wouldn't have bought the laptop. The keyboard is overall nice. Fairly quiet. Great for school.

While it is just a nitpick, my track pad is crooked. It is lopsided but works perfectly fine. It means that their quality control might not be so great. The screen is nice and bright. But it can get imprints from the keyboards.

Conclusion:
Overall, it works and it works well. Would I buy it again? Due to the keyboard missing strokes, probably not. Yes, it was that annoying to me. But it works nice with my fix and I am happy to keep it. I would recommend thoroughly testing your unit before the return period. After thinking about, the touchscreen version might had been fun and helpful to do quick tasks. I would probably consider that for my next laptop.

I got this laptop to replace a long-in-the-tooth eee-pc (Atom based) netbook. I wanted something with a little more oomph for doing Android programming. I also needed the higher screen resolution as the new Android Studio programming environment really can't be used on a low resolution screen. This product delivers on both of those counts. It also has a very nice, thin form factor. Almost too thin as I sometimes get the sensation of fragility, which is increased by a slight give on the cover when I pick it up. Is it really fragile? Probably not. But I find myself treating it with more respect than my old netbook, which felt fairly robust.

It came with Windows 8 pre-installed. It was a nicer environment than I expected, but I still found it irksome. Too many design choices that really didn't make sense. I found it annoying. But enough about that, as this is a review of the hardware, not the OS. More to the point, Win8 seemed a bit sluggish and slow on this machine. Not horrendously so, but enough to annoy me. So I set about to fix that. My solution: replace the spinning hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD) and install Linux Mint 15 XFCE. I got a 240gig SSD from crucial (go to their SSD finder and pick the V5-171; they didn't have this specific submodel listed when I purchased). I was briefly puzzled on how to remove the back (only used to working on desktops prior to this) but soon realized that after removing the single screw holding the cover on the bottom, you have to slide that entire cover towards the front to easily remove it. There was nothing teribly difficult about replacing the drive except the connector, and with a little close examination I figured it out. Don't be alarmed if you pull the whole connector strip out. It goes back in and locks with two nearly hidden plastic latches on either side. It was definitely a learning experience for me.

Once it was back together, I loaded Linux Mint (you will need to go into the bios and set the boot to "Legacy"; it will let you install Linux without doing that, but you will have to reinstall again after setting it; I know because that's how my install went; just set to "Legacy" first). The difference in performance is remarkable. Boot and shutdown times are very short. Andoid Studio starts in about 20% of the time it took on Win8 with the spinning hard drive. All programs open incredibly fast. Basically, it is now a very zippy and capable machine.

My one big gripe with the machine is the trackpad. Yuck. It has a trackpad that has buttons built-in such that you just press on the pad and it clicks. No separate buttons. It also seems a bit too sensitive. I understand that some people like clickable trackpads, and I believe those fruit machines also sport such a system, but I can tell you it is an annoyance on this machine. Perhaps it is Acer's implementation, or perhaps all such mechanisms suck, but this constitutes an annoyance that I don't seem likely to grow comfortable with. Does it inspire fits of rage? Frothy flows of invective? No. It's just a mild, recurrent issue that mars an otherwise very nicely executed product. My Kingdom for Dedicated Trackpad Buttons!

I see another reviewer disliked the keyboard. I haven't personally had any issues with it. It's a keyboard.

Everything else seems to work quite nicely. All hardware seems to work under Linux with no fiddling. Wireless is great. The charger is decent but with an odd round plug-end that upsets an otherwise fairly svelte profile. Screen is bright and crisp. I'm not overly fond of the high-gloss treatment on the screen. A matte finish would have made viewing nicer. Battery life is good.

All in all a huge upgrade for me and an extremely capable programming platform. I took a star for the trackpad. Quite pleased if not ecstatic.

Really light and really small compared to our last laptop. Came with Windows 8 loaded and was a bit of adjustment however the machine is very responsive. Overall very pleased with our most recent Acer computer.

I bought this laptop today from my computer guy. It was brand new, I'm the one that actually cut open the box. I had him upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB, and it flies! I recommend this computer for anyone looking for a nice, stable computer. Upgrade the RAM if you get a chance and just sit back and enjoy! I usually don't write reviews on Amazon if I didn't buy it on Amazon, but this computer is worth it. The best laptop I've had since my last Acer in 2009. I have since had a Toshiba and Sony, also both good computers. This is just what I've wanted for, not only speed, but convenience, as this is a lighter laptop then the rest have been.

Just purchased this laptop recently and I am really happy with it. Build quality seems very solid. the lid is glossy but the inside around the keyboard and track pad are not which is nice, as far as I can tell it doesn't get smear marks like the gloss.

The Intel core i3 processor seems to have the speed I need. I am able to run all the desktop applications that I use on my desktop which has an Intel core i7 in it.

The integrated Intel HD 4000 performs well in video situations such as Youtube and Hulu, I haven't had any issues. I tried Minecraft, Portal 2 and varies other low end games on this system. Minecraft runs about 20 FPS and Portal 2 runs awesome with all the settings as high as they can go. Considering this is not a gaming system I think that's pretty good and works well for light gaming.
I like that the system supports up to 8GB of memory.
One thing I don't care for as an IT Tech, the BIOS is locked down. I can only change a few settings. The BIOS is called insydeh20, I feel if that is installed there should at least be a way to disable it.
Last note: there is no Bluetooth which I actually thought all laptops had.
Overall this is a solid system and has some nice features to go with it. This is an excellent system for my needs.

One note, setting the supervisor password for the BIOS allows you to change a few extra settings.

I'm a college student and this was by far the best computer for me. Whether you're just doing light browsing or doing some gaming like world of warcraft or sims 3, this laptop can handle it. One thing that bothers me is the trackpad, I keep on hitting it whenever I type moving the cruiser and the place of where I'm typing. The battery is decent, I can last a max 3 hours whilst playing sims 3. I love this laptop, but it's a bit heavier than my old one I use for travel.

This is my first chromebook, so I am still getting used to it. But it is lighting fast (compared to the dell I had before). Probably the most memory I use is watching Netflix, but I don't have a problem streaming. It starts up in seconds and the battery seems to last for days on standby, which is nice. Its super light and easy to carry around at work. You can pull it out like a phone and google for quick answers or bring up documents without the hassle of waiting for startup or a tiny screen. I haven't had any connectivity issues with it.

The thing I am disappointed with is the slides, docs and spreadsheets programs.. they are not as compatible with office as I thought they would be, but they will open and edit office docs. However, even with simple documents the formatting is changed dramatically. Its still usable, just requires more effort to re-edit. Being able to store everything on the google drive and open from any computer is awesome.

The only thing that's not good is the bottom doesn't come screwed on and there are actually "warranty void" stickers over the screw holes, so the back does fall off every now and them, which I feel is asking for trouble.

For the price, the value is great. I've never had a computer this mobile or fast. I'm hoping the apps will improve as time goes on.

Fast startup.
No crapware.
No frequent updates.
No more Norton price increases.
Lite weight.
Easy to read text

I am still adjusting to the google spreadsheet and trying to figure out photo downloads.
I don't like having to buy a new printer or boot up the old laptop to print

When I was shopping for a new laptop i did a lot of looking and research...but then someone asked "how are you going to be using it?" That is when I realized that I didn't need all the programs that came with most laptops...MS Office kind of stuff....and even though
I didn't know exactly what I wanted, I did know that I didn't want something that took forever to turn on, had to update all the time, and would get sluggish eventually with or without the updates. So I tried out Google Drive and Picasa and some other Google apps and they are great. This was my solution and I couldn't be happier. So great.

Would be five stars if it came with Windows 7. Now I have to ship it to myself and correct that before giving it to my friend. I needed a laptop with an SSD, but they were all prohibitively expensive. Why do manufacturers charge $250 more for a $90 SSD?

I bought this + a $30 4 gig crucial sodimm and a $100 120GB SSD, Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MX, and a $6 external enclosure. For $600 I ended up with a laptop better than any sub $1000 I was able to find plus a bonus external 500 gig hard drive. Excellent value

The touchpad on this Acer was so sensitive (even when adjusted down), trying to type with this computer was a most frustrating experience. The slightest brush of my palm added characters, moved paragraphs and erased entire emails. After two weeks, I gave up and returned it in favor of a Dell that I was able to try before buying. Thankfully, Amazon has a quick and easy return system, but the whole ordeal was still a hassle since I use my PC daily for work.

you won't find a better 15.6" touchscreen for ~$500. Three usb ports, HDMI port, internal DVD, 500+ GB HDD, backlit keyboard - there's a long list of great stuff. it's fast, quiet, and doesn't put out much heat (no Dell thigh-burn here). i bought this for work and liked it so much after a few weeks that i bought another one for my family. expect maybe 3hrs on the battery. meh - but that's the market reality.
only real peeve is the physical spacebar response on the keyboard can be erratic when typing fast - it cangetannoying. also the trackpad is very sensitive. it can pick up a contact from your hands/thumbs pretty easily while typing and unintentionally move your cursor downscreen mid-sentence - super annoying. basically, be mindful of your hand position while you type - and be extra assertive with the spacebar.
overall though - this is a great buy for work, school & general family use.

overall, the computer was good, just as described. light in weight and sleek look. Lighted keyboard and other features that make it look a worthy computer for the price especially. only setback is with Operating system windows 8, It became really had for my parents to adopt to the new homescreen as opposed to desktop and start menu in the previous windows versions. applications provided are only microsoft based. one cannot load a yahoo application based on another browser like chrome. then there is the issue of closing the windows. the x on the top right which windows users are used to is gone. closing different tabs and open windows is a nightmare. i found myself closing running applications through the task manager.
otherwise, the hardware is recommendable.
ill be more than happy if i can be upgraded to the newly released windows 8.1 which solves most of this issues.

Be aware - this review concerns the SELLER Antonline, not the product from Acer. (I selected "Like" for product -- but would rate the Seller, Antonline, "I hate it")

I ordered the Acer laptop in June as a graduation gift for my son. It actually arrived earlier than expected and was gifted a short time later. While the laptop seems fine in all other respects, it had one manufacturer flaw - it simply would not charge. While plugged in, it operated well and my son loved the Windows 8 interface, but remove the plug and it would not operate. I tried to seek a repair or replacement under the factory warranty through stores local to my area. I was always redirected back to the original seller. I contacted Antonline within the 30 day guarantee window by email through Amazon. I then contacted Amazon to make them aware of the issue and they, also, sent an email explaining the issue. I received an email back explaining that my 30 days had been exceeded and, therefore, outside the return policy (Antonline was counting down from the "order" date, not the "received by" date). I contacted Amazon once again to determine when the 30 day guarantee begins and they confirmed that the guarantee begins the date of delivery to the customer, not the order date. They, also, sent another follow up email explaining to Antonline that I was within the return policy time frame and this matter should be resolved by them. I received my final email notice from Antonline explaining (again) that they do not follow the Amazon guidlines and, instead, begin the 30 days from the date of order, not the date received. (For clarity, the difference between the two dates was 3 days).

After contacting Amazon and asking what to do, I was told I would receive a total refund of the purchase (isn't this why we all LOVE Amazon in the first place?) and I could simply reorder the laptop from another seller. While that isn't the easiest way to resolve this issue, it is one way and I have chosen to do just that. It really seems as though Antonline went out of their way to not resolve a manufacture warranty issue that could have been handled simply and would have resulted in a sale retained by them, a happy customer with a good review and need not have involved Amazon at all. Personally, I would never order from Antonline again knowing their attitude towards the consumers they sell to.

If you like what this laptop has to offer - as I did - I suggest searching another seller on Amazon and find yourself happier in the end should you face a warranty issue as I have.
